What does our skin do?

Our skin is the largest organ of our body that protects us from various types of damage. It has many functions like protecting our inner organs from damage, regulates our temperature, excretes waste, detects pain, sensation, pressure and provides for vitamin D synthesis.

There are 2 major layers to our skin: the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis forms the outermost layer of protection comprising of 4 types of cells, Keratin being the largest in number. Keratin provides us with protection as it 'water-proofs' us but the cells are also shed daily. If the dead cells aren't exfoliated off they build up on the skin causing a dull complexion or acne.

The dermis layer is where the collagen and elastin fibres are situated. They hold our organs in place. As we age they deteriorate due to the ageing process and from damage from ultra-violet exposure.

Our skin provides us with protection but we need to protect our skin. Damaging ultra-violet rays destroy the structures within our skin, which we may see as sagging, wrinkles, dark spots, dryness, redness. The signs we see on our skin have been cause by repeated damage over many years of not caring for our skin.

Daily use of an SPF 50+ sunscreen can prevent damage to the underlying cells. Our skin should also be replenished with active cosmeceuticals like Vitamin C (which helps with fine lines), Vitamin A (plumps and refines the skin), regular use of anti-oxidant complexes, cleansers and moisturisers. Regular and consistent use will help to repair and restore your skin.
